We just returned from taking most of the Ik students who are attending the Family Care Uganda School--primary and secondary, home to the mountains for the term holidays. People were so happy to see how much they'd grown. After working so hard the last 2 terms and getting good grades in both elementary and secondary, it was fantastic for our Ik young people to be back up the mountains! Last year we brought 12 Ik students from remote mountain villages. The first round of students are doing very well, having adjusted beautifully and are very appreciative of the opportunity to gain an education.  In the past, Ik youth have tried studying in Karamoja, the surrounding area, however, they have to endure bullying and poor treatment by their aggresive neighbors. So getting to attend the Family Care Uganda School where they can learn and excel without hindrance is a real Godsend to these beautiful people. Read more about More Ik Students Arrive

Progress!

Here are some pictures of the progress on our latest home for children. As you can see, in some of the pictures, the dorms are nearly finished—and just need the facing board on the roof and some final-touch finishes. We really want to give extra thanks to each of you this month. The trip our older kids were able to take, was absolutely life-changing. Remembering where they have lived all their lives with the most horrible war, some in the pure bush with parents killed and with different guardians putting them to work, they really had no hope but to continue in endemic poverty. Permanent housing for our kiddos:  We’ve had a lot of challenges since starting and each and every one has come with its unique, inspiring, wonderful solution. Our current biggest push is to build beautiful housing for our dear kiddos. The next building is really coming along—built a lot by prayers, making our own bricks, donations of cement, sand, aggregate rock and other materials from friends and people in the area. We are hoping to build 4 such buildings so please do pray with us for the Lord’s miraculous continued supply. Read more about June Updates from Gulu

In a previous update, I mentioned that Mike and I had seen a couple kiddos helping carry water with the ladies we employ. We interviewed them, while they were covered in mud learning they are orphans, that their names are Fiona and Scovia, and we readily accepted them into our school. Well, they’ve now joined, we’ll get their uniforms shortly and these photos are just a couple days after they came to be with us. Read more about Rescuing Child Workers

We have hit the 200 mark! We now house, educate and feed over 200 Acholi children at our Family Care Uganda School. Of course, that doesn’t mean that we have to do all the work ourselves. Our FCU students love being a part of the work and action, whether it’s fetching water from the nearby well, or spending half an hour in between classes moving bricks. These creative kids love finding fun in whatever they do. In this case, a fun game of Toss the Brick helps get all the bricks for our third brick kiln moved before the rain starts in a few days. We have been so busy during the school holidays building before the children return. Our current project is to build 4 new dorm rooms. In the first picture above, you can see the completed foundations. Our surrounding community have been coming over asking if we would be building again this year. Today was guardian visitation day and Open House. It was so cool that quite a few of our children's guardians got to make their way to our school and spend the afternoon with their kids. Everyone got to enjoy sitting around picnic style, relaxing and catching up on recent news and the latest progress by teachers and staff. Many of the guardians rented a pick up or vehicle together. Since we normally focus on the children and progress made at the Project Gulu School, we thought to take a look behind the scenes and introduce you to the team that makes it all possible -- our Project Gulu School teaching staff.
