Patricino un Libro’s campaign with the Otomi Indians

Isabelle Nizincourt

It was a joy to resume our programs after nearly everything in Mexico came to a halt in April due to the flu emergency. We recently returned from our first campaign in the State of Queretaro at the Otomi Indian communities. The Otomi are the 5th largest Indian population in Mexico, and like most other tribes, the majority live in poverty and exclusion. Some Otomi Indians move to the cities, others to the US, and those who remain on their lands are faced with high unemployment and marginalization. Our volunteers at Patrocina un Libro celebrated Children’s Day 2009 at the “Arena Santa Lucia” in Monterrey, Mexico. Our first “Sponsor a Book” campaign for 2009 took us to Guerrero, the home state of famed Acapulco, but also the land of some of the poorest municipalities in México. Our volunteers distributed 150 toys and 4,200 sponsored books.

“I asked my mommy for a doll for Christmas, but she couldn’t get one! Thanks for the pretty doll!”

“These kids will never forget your visit here today. You do not understand what it means for them!”

These were just a few of the reactions that we received during Christmas and Kings day as our team of volunteers distributed toys and Activated Ministries sponsored books to the children and parents at the AMANC Hostel, a facility for low-income families coming from the provinces to Mexico City for cancer treatment.
