In Mexico, Children’s Day is thought of as the second most important festival after the Christmas holidays. It is a time to honor and remember children and an opportunity for children to enjoy a day of festivities, presents, and special attention from their parents and families.
In the beginning of the year our attention was drawn to three groups of children who were going to miss out on Children’s Day this year. These children live in extreme poverty, and many of their parents are in prison or have abandoned them. When we heard about their plight we went into action to organize events for these children, so that they could know that they were not forgotten, but were loved and important.
Together with many volunteers from our local community we organized three memorable events where all the children received gifts of toys and ate a special meal of tamales while they enjoyed an hour of entertainment from clowns, puppets, singers and dancers.
At each of the programs we set up our free book store which displayed the beautifully illustrated character building books and activity books donated by Activated Ministries. During the program each child had the opportunity to pick out three books for them to take home. For each of the children, this was a highlight of the event!
Our heartfelt appreciation goes to Activated Ministries for your very generous contribution of children’s books. Your sponsorship is vital to our programs as a means of relaying hope, values, and faith through these meaningful books. Too often children’s books are written purely for their entertainment value, but your books are rich in morals that clearly teach good behavior and life lessons. Thank you!
