We’re fast approaching the March 18th deadline for submitting applications for the summer/fall semester “In Recognition of Service” (IROS) scholarships. If you are a college or university student who qualifies for this program and could use help covering your tuition, click here to apply for an IROS Scholarship.
For those of you who haven’t heard about the program yet, we would like to take a minute to give you a glimpse of this life-changing college scholarship program that is made possible thanks to the generosity of our donors and the dedication of the students who are using the IROS program to further their education.
This program began in 2010 when Activated Ministries’ Board, staff and volunteers began looking for new ways to make a difference in the lives of those we serve. Many of us have spent years as missionaries on foreign fields and continue to support missionaries, pastors and volunteers in the US and abroad through Activated Ministries. From our experience, we know that being able to save for your children’s college education is often one of the things a missionary sacrifices. It's not that you don't want to save, but the nature of serving as a missionary is that you invest your time, energy and what limited funding you have serving others and helping those who cannot help themselves, much less support you in return. By providing college scholarships to the children of those who have dedicated their lives in service to the Lord and others, we could be helping both the missionaries and their children.
Our very first "In Recognition of Service" (or IROS) scholarships were awarded in the Fall Semester of 2010. Since then, this international program has continued to gain momentum and we are happy to report that, as of the fall semester of 2012, we have awarded over 150 scholarships to qualifying individuals to be applied towards their college tuition. Scholarships have been awarded to individuals seeking degrees in nursing, business administration, early childhood and elementary education, graphic design, leadership and management, Chinese language and culture and criminal justice, to name a few. These individuals are studying at universities and colleges in 20 different countries around the world and counting.
