Disaster Relief

On Monday, August 29th, Hurricane Katrina hammered New Orleans and the coasts of Mississippi and Louisiana leaving thousands dead and hundreds of thousands of refugees who have been streaming into neighboring states and cities. The magnitude of this human tragedy is hard to comprehend, and Activated Ministries is actively working with missionaries of the Family International who are offering physical and spiritual assistance to the hurricane victims. On March 11th, 2011, what eventually became known as the Great East Japan Earthquake struck off the coast of Miyagi prefecture, spawning a massive tsunami that wiped out a 600 kilometer stretch of the Sanriku coastline, and triggering a nuclear meltdown at the Daiichi Fukushima nuclear power plant. In response to this unprecedented tragedy, TFI members, friends, and other concerned individuals from across the country began working together to provide support for the victims in any way possible. Last summer (August 2011), we invited people from the parents and children’s club in Higashi-Matsushima (one of the earthquake-stricken areas) to our friend's villa. This vacation was made possible through the support of many kind people who donated their time, skills, and goods in order to make this happen.            Read more about Christmas in tsunami-stricken Japan

Many lives were affected by the earthquake of March 11th; among those were the mothers of Higashimatsushima. During summer vacation, mothers of Higashimatsushima take their children to Nobiru beach. On this trip we visited three centers in Matsushima area; the Satohama Evacuation Center, Ooshio Shimin Center, and Ono Shimin Center. We’re very thankful for all who sent supplies and funds for this trip, and for those who prayed for us; and a big thank-you to Mrs. Yoshida who transported the supplies. The Phoenix project is aimed to bring encouragement and a personal touch along with material aid to refugees from the earthquake and tsunami that devastated much of the northeastern coast.

This project brought together professional clowns from Tokyo, the Band Aid Band and other volunteer workers in an effort to bring smiles to the faces of hundreds who had lost their homes or were forced to evacuate due to the Fukushima nuclear power plant failure.
